چکیده

The small angle neutron scattering (SANS) behavior of fully neutralized sodium polyacrylate gels is investigated in the presence of calcium ions. Analysis of the SANS response reveals the existence of three characteristic length scales, two of which are of thermodynamic origin, while the third length is associated with the frozen-in structural inhomogeneities. This latter contribution exhibits power law behavior with a slope of about -3.6, reflecting the presence of interfaces. The osmotically active component of the scattering signal is defined by two characteristic length scales, a correlation length e and a persistence length L. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Calcium Induced Volume Transition in Polyelectrolyte Gels

The osmotic properties and the small angle neutron scattering (SANS) behaviour of fully neutralized sodium polyacrylate gels are investigated in the presence of calcium ions. Analysis of the SANS response displays three characteristic length scales, two of which are of thermodynamic origin, while the third, associated with the frozen-in structural inhomogeneities, is static. The SANS results ar...

Notes Comparison between Neutral Gels and Neutralized Polyelectrolyte Gels in the Presence of Divalent Cations

Introduction In the past decade several investigations have been reported on various hydrogels,1-3 particularly neutral polymer gels [e.g., poly(acrylamide) or poly(vinyl alcohol)] and weakly charged polyelectrolytes [e.g., poly(acrylic acid) or poly(styrenesulfonate)]. Less attention has been paid to neutralized polyelectrolytes in the presence of added salt. It is generally understood that fu...

Effect of monovalent-divalent cation exchange on the swelling of polyacrylate hydrogels in physiological salt solutions.

The volume transition induced by monovalent-divalent cation exchange of fully neutralized polyacrylate hydrogels was investigated in aqueous NaCl solutions. The variation of the osmotic swelling pressure, shear modulus, and mixing pressure was measured when Na(+) ions were substituted by divalent or trivalent cations. Alkali metal salts move freely throughout the entirely network, and alkaline ...

Comparative Study of Scattering and Osmotic Properties of Synthetic and Biopolymer Gels

The physiological functions of biological macromolecules strongly depend upon their conformation. Study of the thermodynamic and structural aspects of ion/polymer interactions has the potential to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of ion mediated structural organization of charged biomacromolecules (e.g., nucleic acids, proteins, proteoglycans, etc.) within cells or extracellular...
